The Root of Sin

Sin: “Actions by which humans rebel against God, miss His purpose for their life, and surrender to the power of evil rather than to God.”

Sin has been an issue since the third chapter of Genesis when Adam and Eve ate of the Forbidden Tree. In the end it allowed sin into this world and we were sent out of the presence of God. Now we live in a fallen world that is melting away. But my question to you is where does sin start at, what is the initial spark that causes us to sin?

Most people especially Baptists would stand up and say that darn dirty devil. The devil does tempt, but in the end he does not make us act on that temptation. People use the devil as a scapegoat for acting crazy, but the beginning of this we dive to see that Sin originates in our heart. Lets take a look at what the Bible says about our heart.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. Matthew 15:19

God has an opinion about our heart. Its evil. The evil that lies in our heart leads to so much sin. The question now since the heart is so evil it has to be focused on something. If it was truly sold out to God it would be centered on Godly things and not evil works. Though none of us are perfect and we will still sin.

The problem of the heart stems on the fact that we are not truly worshiping God, which leads to sin. So if we are not worshiping God with our heart, then the problem lies deeper then our heart. There is a simple answer here Sin starts with the worship of one’s self. It starts with Idolatry. It is no longer about what God wants, its about what we want. In a sense we have personally dethroned God over our lives. Sin starts their blossoms through our heart and we take our actions based on that.

Now that we know the root of the problem we should be able to defeat it correct? No sadly we will continue to come back as Solomon wrote in Proverbs.

Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly. Proverbs 26:11

There is only one answer to sin in the end and that is the finished work of Christ. Our sin was defeated on the cross when Jesus gave his life. Defeating Death the poster child of sin he rose from the grave and ascended to heaven. Why did he do all this? So he could unite us back with the Father. As for the Christian we still sin on occasion  but we need to repent of that sin with a broken heart before a humble God. And always be teaching yourself the Gospel reminding yourself of what Christ did. The gospel is not I raised my hand walked the aisle thing, it’s an every single day thing. It is full surrender to our Lord and King. Self Worship is where sin tends to start and now we must remove ourselves from the throne and surrender our life to our great and mighty God.
