Last week during my sunday school one the questions from the book we are going through was What did we do to earn our salvation? There were many responses, everything from going forward, to accepting Jesus into your heart. One that wasn’t mentioned which surprised me was I got baptized.
who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
2nd Timothy 1:9 ESV
So how does one earn salvation. There is no one who can earn salvation. Our salvation depends upon a holy God. One whom is sovereign and faithful. One whom I stood as an enemy to. Though now because of His mercy stand beside Him in undeserved righteousness. Walking that aisle to go talk to a pastor did nothing for you. Saying some sinners prayer did nothing for you. Though I’m not judging for I know many who were saved through the sinners prayer as I was depends on the heart, but in contrast the sinners prayer has made many believe they are saved when they truly are not. Baptism has nothing to do with salvation, look at the thief on the cross. He believed that Jesus was the son of God. How did he know by a work of the Holy Spirit. See if any of us had the choice to come to salvation, we would snub our nose at it because of our sinful hearts. If we were left ourselves we would choose hell over God. Burn for a world that is melting away as snow does on a late winter day.
no one understands; no one seeks for God.
Romans 3:11 ESV
This though is were the awesomeness comes in. God chose us before the foundations of the world. He chose who would come to Him. Just as the pharaohs heart in Exodus, Who’s hearts would be hard and who’s would be soft to the Gospel. So here we stand as people who were chosen by the very creator of the universe to be called to Him. Not because we are good at something, but because we have a merciful and loving God. How do you earn salvation, its impossible with out the power of God calling you. Because its the Holy Spirit that gives your heart a rebirth into this world.
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us[b] for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight
