Dinner at Simons

Last time I wrote you will notice I covered the same verses that I am about to look at here.  But now I look at them as the beginning of the passion week. I will be doing a blog following the timeline to the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter. This actually happened one week before the crucifixion.

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany
1Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
2So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at the table.
3Mary therefore took a pound£ of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said,
5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii£ and given to the poor?”
6He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it£ for the day of my burial.
8The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus£ was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
10So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,
11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.      John 12: 1-11

So here we are and Jesus is starting his move towards Jerusalem. He knows were the road ends, he knows what is going to happen, and how its going to happen. But yet he sits here ready to follow the will of His father.  We see several characters, we have Martha making dinner, Lazarus the guy that Jesus brought from the dead with his feet leaned against the table, Mary who is washing Jesus’s feet with an expensive perfume, Judas who is complaining, and of course our Lord.

Lets focus on Mary though. She is pouring this expensive perfume over Jesus, something that would in today’s world be more than any of us could afford. Why is she doing this, Jesus explains she is doing something that will happen less then a week later, she is preparing Jesus for burial. Jesus knows that the time has arrived, and even tells the disciples you will always have the poor, but that he would be leaving soon. Jesus knows the road he is walking down. Looking at what Jesus says he wants her to keep it. For it will be used on him for burial. The Messiah, the savior, is preparing to be the unblemished lamb for us. Mary is anointing and worshiping him with this expensive perfume preparing for the end of the week.

Here is my thought, how are we preparing our hearts for this week. Are we worshiping our Lord, anointing Him with our praise and worship. Are we remembering what happens on the coming Friday had an eternal value for us? Are we giving Jesus our all, or are we holding some back for gain as Judas wanted to do with the perfume. Were is your heart as we enter the greatest week that this planet has ever seen?

Thanks for reading, I always welcome comments. I know my grammar is not the greatest at times and appreciate your forgiveness in that. Please be sure to like and share also.
