During most of Jesus’s ministry there were plots to kill, disprove, or just to get rid of him. Here were are the Tuesday before the crucifixion and we that the plot has been hatched.
1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover.
2And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.
Judas to Betray Jesus
3£Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
4He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them.
5And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.
6So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.
A lot of stuff has happened in 24 hours, the scribes and the Jewish leaders have questioned, sent spies, and watched Jesus from a far. They want Him gone. So satan enters Judas, which if you know anything about Judas he was a thief who claimed to be a disciple. And he moves to betray Jesus for 30 silver. If you look back in the old testament there is actually a prophecy pointing to the very thought of this.
Zechariah 11:12-14(ESV) 12Then I said to them, “If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. 13Then the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord, to the potter. 14Then I broke my second staff Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
So to clear a thought up, there are those that believe Judas was a true follower of Christ prior to this moment. And at this moment he lost his salvation. This is false. I will explain why, Judas was never a true follower of Christ. He stole from the money pouch on a constant basis. Thus showing Judas never had his salvation to lose. But as we continue towards the passion week lets me ask you this.
What are you betraying Christ for in your life? What are you putting before him as an Idol. Is it money, promotions, cell phones, video games, facebook? There are so many things that we can betray Christ with. Just a thought as we continue this week.
