Jonah chapter 1:4-6

I apologize for the time between the Jonah blogs, my life has been busy with the birth of my first child and helping my wife through her pregnancy.  I praise God for my beautiful Isabella. But lets dive into the most important thing and that’s scripture.

But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. Andthey hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.
Jonah 1:4-6

In verse four we see how mighty our God is. God threw a wind on the sea and created a great storm. This storm was so bad that it threaten to destroy the ship. This is the same God whom later in the New Testament would walk on the sea and calm it with a simple command. God also show’s He will now allow you to bluntly disobey Him and not have God get your attention. God here is getting Jonah’s attention but as we will see Jonah is being stubborn.

In verse 5 we see just as any human does they panic. They are throwing things off their ship to try and save themselves along with crying out to their Idols. Is it not amazing in this world that a lot of times we as Christians do the same thing.  We turn to people, money, and the Internet looking for an answer to the great storms in our lives when we should be turning to the God of this universe. But here we see Jonah is trying to just ignore God. He is trying to hide from God, by hiding in the belly of the ship. Hiding from God is never possible. He is always there.

Finally in verse 6 we see a pagan ship captain reminding Jonah that he should be calling out to God. Though the ship captain is doing it for his own well being, God is using that ship captain for His Will. This show’s that God is willing to use all of His creation to get a person’s attention, and if God wants your attention there is not end to how He will get it.

We see in this small section that the God of the universe has control over everything he has created, and when he want’s to get your attention. He will get it through creation or other people, and finally that we hide from God and turn to Idols when we are in the midst of the storm.
